Harlem Speech Works is a Non-Profit organization created to provide free or reduced speech and literacy services to children who would otherwise go without intervention.

Our organization’s mission is to decrease the number of minority school-aged children needing speech therapy and literacy support services. Our organization aims to close the gap between children at and below poverty level and more affluent children needing intervention services. Harlem Speech Works wants to close The 30 million-word gap!

The “30 million word gap” refers to a research study conducted by psychologists Betty Hart and Todd Risley. Their study showed that children from lower-income families hear a staggering 30 million fewer words than children from higher-income families by the time they are 4-years old. If Harlem Speech Works has the opportunity to provide free screenings and language development information we can help to identify children at risk for language and literacy delays earlier in the child’s life. As it stands parents are typically made aware of language delays at the age of 3 when children enter a structured childcare environment. We want to educate the public about what typical language and literacy development is. We want to share the benefits of speech therapy and literacy support services in early child hood. We want to provide intervention services preferably before the age of 3. Critical language learning happens between the years of birth and 3-years old. By providing these services early, before children reach formal school years, we can reduce the number of children needing speech therapy and related services once they begin kindergarten. Our goal is to provide support services at little to no cost to the parents.

All services are provided by NYS licensed and American Speech Language and Hearing Association certified Speech Language Pathologists.
